If Only

Wandering the wastelands of what was my life
I stumble over the carcasses of my dreams
For a moment, I believed anything was possible
Including my own happiness
But then reality reared its ever-practical head
And dashed all my hopes
Tossing me back to the solitary existence I know so well
So I go on
Day by lonely day        
Living on the memories of what might have been
